Police have arrested two men and a woman after an elderly man told officers a masked suspect armed with a shotgun tried to carjack him Friday night in Hilo.
The three are 36-year-old Shannon L.Y. Estocado, his 25-year-old brother, Shalton K. Estocado, and 24-year-old Tearon Pacheco-Fernandez.
Police received a report at about 7:45 p.m. of an attempted robbery on the 300 block of Makaala Street. A 77-year-old man told officers the suspect tried to take his truck keys. When the elderly man refused, the suspect fire a shot, causing the elderly man to fall and run, sustaining minor injuries to his hands, police said.
The suspect then allegedly took several items from the man’s truck then drove off in a silver truck.
The victim got the suspects’ license plate number and officers tracked the registered owner to a Chong street address where the truck was found, as well as items reportedly taken from the elderly man’s truck and 25 marijuana plants.
The Estocado brothers and Pacheco-Fernandez were apprehended and remain in custody pending further investigation of potential robbery, reckless endangering, unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle, terroristic threatening, assault, firearms and drug charges.
Pacheco-Fernandez has multiple open court cases on firearms, drug and property offenses and was out on release when the offense occurred, police said.
Shannon Estocado has a criminal history that includes firearm, robbery, assaults, and property offenses, police said.
Shalton Estocado has pending a reckless driving case in the court systems.
Police said they were already investigating another reported carjacking incident where a suspect attempted to steal a truck from a 37-year-old man using pepper spray and a gunshot was heard. The carjacking attempt was unsuccessful and the suspect fled on foot.
